This album, originally released on Musicor Records in 1971, features country music's greatest singer paying tribute to one of its legendary songwriters. The honoree is Leon Payne, a gifted instrumentalist who topped the country charts in 1949 with his recording of "I Love You Because," but who is remembered today for the thousands of country songs he penned, among them the standards "They'll Never Take Her Love From Me," "Blue Side of Lonesome," "Take Me," "Lost Highway," "I Love You Because" and "Things Have Gone To Pieces." Jones, who had had hits with two Payne songs in 1965, recorded this tribute in the year following Payne's death. With such a wealth of material to choose from, Jones and producer Pappy Daily had little trouble finding ten stellar numbers for this album. Tracks include rerecordings of Jones' two Payne-penned hits, "Take Me" and "Things Have Gone to Pieces," as well as "With Half A Heart," and "The Selfishness In Man," the last a maudlin heartstring-puller that would come across as ludicrous from a lesser talent but is profoundly moving in Jones' hands. One of Jones' best tribute albums.
